This morning I dropped off two paintings for the annual Ferens Art Gallery’s Open Exhibition, which takes place from Saturday 12th February until Sunday 3rd April 2011. I have entered a few times in the past without success, but I have positive feelings this time – I am entering “3 Wise Men An An Interloper” and “Red Rocks”. Both paintings are an acrylic/ink media on canvas board and are mounted and framed. I entered them successfully for the East Yorkshire Open Art Exhibition last July so decided to use them again.

I will find out if I have been successful on 4th February, so fingers crossed!

This morning I finally managed to get to the exhibition at Sewerby Hall, Bridlington, where two of my paintings have been hanging since July 3rd. I was chuffed that my pieces were chosen, since it was the first time I’ve entered this particular exhibition. I really thought that today was my last chance for viewing, but when I got there, the date of the exhibition is displayed as 3rd July to 31st August, not the 29th (as I had on my entry form). Anyhow, I managed to get a photo of my two paintings in situ – there were quite a variety of artworks on show and it was worth the trip. I spotted quite a few pieces from fellow East Riding Artists members, including a couple of new acrylic paintings by Peter Schoenecker, whose work I have always liked.

I didn’t like to take any more photos since it was fairly busy, with it being a Bank Holiday weekend – the painting you can see next to my two is called Manhattan Sunset, painted in acrylic by an Lesley Webb – I’ve not heard of her before.

As well as the exhibition, which was situated upstairs in the West Wing (several rooms, actually), there were lots of other artworks on display (some of which were temporary and others permanent) along with a museum, a room dedicated to Amy Johnson and lots of rooms full of antique furniture etc. The grounds were full also today – there was a vintage (or was it classic??) car show and a display of jousting by some people who re-enact certain periods in history – not my cup of tea at all, but obviously very popular.

My favourite view of the day was the following snaps I took of some llamas that are resident within the gardens of the Hall:

It is the annual Summer Open Exhibition at the Wolds Gallery, and this year the theme is “Coastal”. I will probably also be entering my “Aitch At Sea” painting and maybe try to paint another one before the entry deadline.

I have combined an abstract styled background with a realistic style for the people on the foreground. The painting is on box canvas and measures 10 x 8 inches, painted in canvas.

You can view the gallery at Wolds Village here, just click on the “Art Gallery” tab on the left hand side.

I am hoping that the fact these are relatively small will promote some sales, expecially in this economic climate!

This is the second painting in the new series of paintings that I am in the process of creating for the gallery in Bridlington. It is 40cm x 30cm and painted with acrylic paints and inks on a deep edged box cavas. This one is called Six Degrees Of Separation and is based on the theory that anyone on the planet can be connected to any other person on the planet through a chain of acquaintances that has no more than five intermediaries. I have used colours to simply represent the six degrees. This theory has also been used as a basis for a play by John Guare in 1990 and a film in 1993.

I like to try and utilise popular phrases and quotations as a basis for my abstract works, as I like to try and create more than one interpretation of the words they contain.

My next painting will probably be along similar lines, geometric and colourful in design.

“Making Tracks”

This is the first in a set of four new paintings I will be taking to a gallery in Bridlington. They are based on some of my larger bold abstract paintings “Watching Paint Dry” and “Reading Between The Lines”. After discussion with the gallery owner recently, I have agreed to create several smaller sized paintings for the present economic climate, exclusively for the gallery. Therefore, although I will be displaying them online, they will only be for sale through the gallery – details will follow once they are all painted and hung! The canvases are all 40 x 30cm (16 x 12 inches in old money!) and are deep edged box canvas. Painted in acrylic and inks using a technique I experimented with and discovered I enjoyed implementing. Instead of using a paint-brush or a palette knife, I cut up various sized rectangles out of a funky foam sheet. I then dragged the paint and ink along the canvas with the edge of one of these rectangles, until the paint ran out. It gave a very smooth appearance and I found it easy to make the track marks with the edge of the foam, too.

I am finding this a very rewarding way of working as I know that I need to produce a certain amount of paintings in a similar style for a specific purpose, so I feel more motivated than I would have done if I were just creating them at my leisure!

I will start on the next one tomorrow.
