It was our first visit and a wonderful experience. There was a lot to fit in, and despite the heavy snow fall we managed to see Central Park, Battery Park, Times Square, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Statue of Liberty, Flatiron Building, Rockefeller Centre and ice rink, Chrysler Building, Empire State Building plus visit the Magnolia Bakery (and eat yummy cupcakes!), Macys, Bloomingdales, Tiffanys, Fat Annie’s Truck Stop, Century 21, Soho, Greenwich Village and 5th Avenue. After years of watching American TV – especially ‘Friends’, ‘Sex and the City’ and ‘Will and Grace’ this really was a dream come true for me!!

I especially enjoyed our visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art which has a fantastic varied collection of inspiring art: http://www.metmuseum.org/

See all the photos from the trip at: http://s834.photobucket.com/albums/zz261/AndreaFarmerArt/new%20york%202010/

I have recently completed another in my series of mini artworks and matching trinket boxes. The latest addition is based on one of my very early paintings (Variegated Geranium Leaves) and I have concentrated solely on the leaf of the geranium plant for the design. The background of both the min canvas and the trinket box have been painted with a mixture of burnt umber and orange to give a deep rusty orange shade overall. The easel has been painted in sap green to tie in with the green along the stem of the geranium leaf. The trinket box is decorated in the same way, with a brown felt lining added to it and funky foam feet attached underneath to prevent any scratches on delicate surfaces. Both these items will be added to my Etsy Shop today, along with another one or two soon!

I am also working on a set of small paintings on box canvas all with a similar theme. The idea is that I paint an abstract landscape or seascape or any other imaginary scape, always incorporating the letter “H” somewhere in the painting. I will then be naming them “Aitch at the sea-side” or some such!

This is my latest submission to the UPP circle I belong to.
It is a monochrome image of a couple of rusted, discarded wheels resting under the trees in the centre of a meadow in the English Lake District. It was recorded on infrared film, giving its characteristic bright tones and dreamy feel to the foliage and grasses. The film I used is no longer made, in common with many of the less mainstream films once available.
Infrared photography is hard to do with a normal digital DSLR, requiring extremely long exposure times in even in bright sunlight, but I have recently found a company that can convert some DSLRs for infrared photography with much more reasonable exposures, and have sent my ’spare’ body to them for conversion. I’m looking forward to getting it back (in a month or so’s time) and seeing what I can do with it …

In just over a week I will be taking to the stage again in my local amdram production. My role is that of a woman named Joyce, whose husband has just died. The play opens with the dead man apparently still alive, talking to the audience about his funeral. We then see events leading up to his sudden departure from this world, and eventually we discover why he has chosen to hang around for a while. Although it is a comedy, there are some very touching scenes in the play and I think the humour is well placed throughout. I always think that the production week comes upon us all too quickly and before too long it’s over, but I really enjoy the feeling backstage and on during the week. I will have to start looking for a play soon, as I am set to direct the next one!

This month I’ve been busy with a few new pieces of art, one a new departure for me called “Together”. This painting depicts two doves sitting in a tree laden with blossom. I was inspired to paint this in the run up to Valentine’s day over a sunny weekend when it looked as though Spring might be on its way. Hopefully it might still inspire happy thoughts during this next period of cold weather!
