Another in my fragments series, ‘torn’ is a photo of a small piece of decaying plywood in a no longer used slate quarry (near Tilburthwaite). The top ply is almost completely torn off.
This has been entered into a ‘transfomations’ competition at the jpg mag site for inclusion in a future issue of the magazine.

Old Timer

My photograph of a piece of old rusting machinery, ‘old timer’, placed in the top ten in a redbubble ‘Rusty Crusty and falling to bits’ challenge. This photograph was taken at Threlkeld’s museum of rust last year.

latest submission to UPP – Devotion

Devotion by Mike Finley

This is my latest submission to the UPP circle I belong to. It is a partially desaturated image of daffodil in a church window. All but the green and yellow leaves and yellow flowers of the daffodils have been reduced to greys. (The circle I belong to is described as ‘mostly monochrome’ so the treatment suits the group title, if not usual practice)

I’ve recently started to gather together a number of my photographic images into a theme entitled ‘fragments’.

These are images of small parts of natural or found objects where it is not necessarily immediately obvious what the actual object is, and the image itself is a pleasing abstract or semi-abstract image.

‘Rights grabs’ in photo competitions – government petition

A petition has been added to the UK government’s website regarding the common practice of companies holding competitions for photographs, and grabbing all rights to all entries as part of the terms and conditions.

These competitions rely on people not reading the terms and conditions, or finding them difficult to understand. The images provided by the large numbers of photographers (mainly consumers) who enter these competitions are of great value to these companies in marketing campaigns and advertising, use on products and packaging and even in some cases resale and syndication.

The petition asks the Prime Minister to look at this issue during the Government’s current review of intellectual property law, and to examine the ‘Artists Bill of Rights’ promoted by the photographic organisation ‘Pro-Imaging’.

‘Woodland Stream’ awarded Gold label

Woodland Stream by Mike Finley

A monochrome print of my image of a woodland stream has been awarded a Gold label by a United Photographic Postfolios of Great Britain circle, and will go forward to the UPP annual exhibition later this year. This image was made from a photograph taken in the Lake District in 2007.

Camera club annual competition

I’m putting together a submission for the local camera club’s annual competition. I’m planning to submit 3 digital images for projection and two monochrome prints.

(I used to be chairman of the club but resigned a couple of years ago.)
