Wild Fire

I’ve put the Holmes Chapel Camera Club Annual Exhibition up in the local library this Monday. It contains a selection of prints from the members of the club, covering a range of styles. It was selected to show the diversity of styles that the members of our small village club have. I’m pleased to say that two of my images are included.

Steel and Glass

‘Wild Fire’ (left) is an image created from a small area of the back of a headstone in the Lake Ditsrict, while the other image, Steel and Glass (right), is a monochrome image of a (much larger!) piece of a modern building in Manchester.

The exhibition will remain in the Holmes Chapel Library Meeting Room until the 2nd August.

old and new - competition entry

As usual no acceptances, but came the closest I’ve ever managed with one entry – ‘old and new’. This was taken on a wet and dreary day in Whitehaven on the Cumbrian coast – I first spotted the two rather different greengrocers’ shops side by side, and then noticed both had the same name!

A print of this image was placed second in the print class of our camera club’s Annual competition. It is actually a photograph of a small part of the back of a headstone, and shows some texture of the stone, but mostly algae, lichen, and traces of ivy.

Tree and Photographer - featured in the Ace Cafe group on redbubble


‘Tree and Photographer’ is this week’s featured image in the ‘Ace Café‘ group on redbubble.
Images are submitted for consideration by members of the group, and critiqued and voted on for admission by the members of the group. The hosts select a weekly feature image from the images accepted into the group.
There is also a workshop area for discussion of how images could be improved.

In this group we are looking to exhibit exceptional art as voted for by the members. We hope that it will be an open, lively and friendly group where artists are supported and encouraged to grow.

This is my latest submission to the UPP circle I belong to.
It is a monochrome image of a couple of rusted, discarded wheels resting under the trees in the centre of a meadow in the English Lake District. It was recorded on infrared film, giving its characteristic bright tones and dreamy feel to the foliage and grasses. The film I used is no longer made, in common with many of the less mainstream films once available.
Infrared photography is hard to do with a normal digital DSLR, requiring extremely long exposure times in even in bright sunlight, but I have recently found a company that can convert some DSLRs for infrared photography with much more reasonable exposures, and have sent my ‘spare’ body to them for conversion. I’m looking forward to getting it back (in a month or so’s time) and seeing what I can do with it …

My monochrome photograph ‘Branches and Snow’ was placed in the top ten (out of over a hundred entries) in a ‘Winter’ competition in the ‘Photography Fun’ group on the redbubble site. This is its second success in competitions on the site.
